Radio Gdansk English Service, Thursday, August 15th, 2019: In distressing news for fans of Tesco’s hypermarkets in Gdańsk and Gdynia

In distressing news for fans of Tesco’s hypermarkets in Gdańsk and Gdynia, the British retailer recently announced plans to close most hypermarkets in Poland in favor of smaller stores.

According to the trade union Solidarność, Tesco has already sold 8 hypermarkets in Poland, including both in Trójmiasto, one located at Cienista in Gdańsk Chełm, and the other at Nowowiczlińska in Gdynia. Both stores have already begun liquidating stock.

Poland is Tesco’s second biggest overseas market after Thailand. In the last year alone, Tesco has closed 62 stores in Poland as part of reorganization plans aimed at saving the retailer 1.5 billion pounds (€1.75 billion, $2 billion) by 2020.

The changes are due in part to the Sunday trading ban, “which has obliged retail networks across Poland to compensate for the lost days of trading,” according to German media outlet Deutsche Welle. Early in the year, the Polish government claimed it was reviewing the impact of the ban, prompting some to speculate that the government “might relax the rules in this election year.” Thus far, no changes have been forthcoming.

With a razor-thin majority in Parliament thanks to last month’s by-election in Wales, the likelihood of UK MPs stepping in to block a no-deal Brexit has become a worrying possibility for Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

While Johnson has stated a desire to renegotiate the current offer and reportedly expects the EU to “cave in at the last minute,” Reuters reports that he will take all necessary steps to ensure he “deliver[s] “Brexit by any means, including suspending parliament if necessary,” a position supported by a majority – 54% – of respondents in a recent UK ComRes opinion poll.

At issue with the current EU proposal is the so-called “Irish backstop” which attempts to eliminate a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland would necessitate a temporary “customs union” to be established between the UK and the EU, a possibility the Tories have roundly rejected.

The UK is scheduled to leave the EU in 78 days, on the 31st of October.

The Kashubian Cranberry Trail project near Kościerzyna has won third place in the “Traditional Cuisine of the Countryside” category of the second annual “Na Wsi Najlepiej” or “The Countryside is the Best” competition.

The Cranberry Trail project promotes traditional cranberry-based culinary and health products, as well as providing opportunities for tourists to sample delicacies prepared with cranberries harvested locally from Kashubian peat bogs.

„The Tatars, Jews, Germans, Dutch, Russians, and Lithuanians who lived among us for centuries… left a mark on our regional cuisine in the sense of flavors, aromas, and methods of preparation – stressed the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski, adding that the natural production methods, diverse landscapes, and culinary heritage of the Polish countryside has made it an increasingly attractive area for tourism and leisure.

The national competition, which is sponsored by the Polish Tourist Organization, seeks to highlight “the advantages of local tourism and the wide array of opportunities that can be found in the countryside,” Winners receive free support in marketing activities and a place in 10 million copies of a special promotional magazine distributed throughout Poland.

A list of all winners can be found on the competition website at https://nawsinajlepiej.polska.travel .
