Radio Gdansk English Sevice, Saturday, August 17th, 2019: A Polish energy company has signed a 1.3 billion złoty contract to develop solar farms across the country

Kraków-based Columbus Energy announced the ambitious plan with the entire project covering a total capacity of 355 Megawatt (MW). The Polish solar energy market has grown rapidly over the last few years with the state-owned transmission system, recording a total capacity of 471.4 MW at the end of last year and the Polish government has expressed its aim to have a solar capacity of 20.2 GW by 2040.
Analysts claim that Poland could stand to become Europe’s fourth largest producer of solar energy by the end of 2019 behind only Spain, Germany and France.

The Polish government estimates that the losses caused by drought by the end of July stand at 1.09 billion Polish złoty (EUR 250 million)

The drought has put in jeopardy the welfare of many Polish farmers, as it is said that two month’s constant rainfall are needed to restore the situation to normality. Farmers are desperate. In September, they will receive an opportunity to apply for government financial help.
The situation is serious as Poland’s water levels are now comparable with those of Egypt’s.

After another strong period of growth the Port of Gdańsk is preparing for the future with plans to build a Central Port, which would serve as a key logistics hub in the region, making it one of the largest and most modern seaport investments in Europe

In the first half of the year, the port – the fourth-largest on the Baltic – beat its own record of handling more than 25 million tonnes of commodities in the first half of 2018 with an increase of 9 percent year-on-year and more than the port had planned. The strong growth is encouraging Poland to develop its port infrastructure on the Baltic coast to keep up with international trade.

The project is expected to cost around PLN 12 billion, with the first terminals potentially ready in 2029.
