According to new data from Eurostat, defined as cars that run on electricity, natural gas, biofuels and others which are not petrol or diesel, Poland’s 15 percent of alternative fuel cars is far ahead of the nearest country, Lithuania with only nine percent, according to the First News website.
Most of the alternative fuel cars in Poland use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at over 14 percent of the total number of registered cars. Poland also has the second most LPG vehicles in the world behind Turkey.
Fine particulates, which are responsible for thousands of early deaths and instances of illness, are emitted 120 times more by diesel vehicles than by LPG vehicles and LPG is considerably better for the environment than petrol or diesel cars.
The Polish Ministry of Digital Affairs is starting negotiations with the United States with respect to US intelligence services’ unlimited access to Polish citizens’ data on the servers of American companies.
The ministry wants to negotiate a bilateral agreement like the one recently signed between the U.S. and the UK which would prevent US’ intelligence services access to data stored in the cloud by companies such as Google, Microsoft or IBM. The first talks were held in Katowice earlier this week between deputy ministers of both the U.S. and Poland.
Geneticists are using wide-ranging DNA studies to find out what Polish soldiers who died during fighting on Westerplatte at the start of World War II looked like.
The Westerplatte peninsula near Gdańsk was the site of the first clash between Polish and German forces at the start of the 2nd World War in 1939.
Since management of the site has been taken away from the municipal authorities and placed under the auspices of the new Westerplatte Museum, archaeologists have been given access to the site and have found seven skeletons that appear to belong to Polish soldiers who died defending the hugely significant outpost – the symbol of Poland’s desperate fight against Hitler’s invading armies in the first days of the war. Historians have created a list of fifteen names of soldiers who perished.
Geneticists at the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin are studying four skeletons and the co-ordinator of the research said that the team will need to compare their DNA to that of surviving relatives of the soldiers and have appealed for them to come forward to provide DNA samples.
The Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot Metropolitan Area this week withdrew from the contract for the Mevo cycle hire project contracted with NB Tricity, a subsidiary of Nextbike Polska which operates a number of cycle hire schemes in Poland, 7 months after the scheme first started.
As the week progressed several groups raised the concerns about the consequences of the contract failure and the fact that concerns had been raised in May this year that the system was doomed. Among concerns raised was that the cost of maintaining the bikes was too high compared to the price of renting them as well as the poor quality of the bikes themselves and the matter of the accrued loss of 10 million zloty at the failure of the project. The future of the system is yet to be decided.
