Polish President, Andrzej Duda, has been meeting with world leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The invitation only conference for the world’s most high profile figures in politics and business is this year focused on Sustainability. Guests include teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg and embattled US President Trump. Speaking in English, President Duda praised Poland’s strong economic growth and rapidly growing international presence.
The president went on to out Poland as a European tech hub, acknowledging the Polish education system and favourable tax conditions as key factors drawing tech companies to the country.
Later, the Polish president spoke to the strength of the Central and Eastern European countries, saying the region must become a growth engine for the European Union.
Poland’s industrial production rose 3.8% year-on-year to December according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office or GUS.
The increase is strong but is less than experts had predicted.
GUS reported earlier this week that employment in Polish companies also rose by 2.6% year on year.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has wrapped up a trade mission to Japan by honouring a distinguished translator of Polish literature.
Tokimasa Sekiguchi was presented with the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit in a ceremony at the Polish embassy in Tokyo.
The 69 year old translator is one of the top foreign scholars of the Polish language and has translated some of the best known Polish texts into Japanese, including works by Jan Kochanowski, Bolesław Prus, and Adam Mickiewicz.
One of Gdańsk’s main transport hubs is set to receive a major renovation and upgrade according to plans revealed by the city government.
Gdansk Wrzeszcz is one of the busiest stations in the Tricity area, with intercity trains connecting to local SKM and PKM lines.
However the station and its surroundings are currently run-down and in dire need of renovation.
This week the city government tendered a contract with Gdańsk based company „Highway ltd” to design the development.
Plans are likely to include enlarging the station building and a redevelopment of the bus terminal. It comes as Gdańsk’s main railway station, Gdańsk Główny, is undergoing a multi-million euro renovation.
And Poland’s Iga Świątek defeated Spain’s Carla Suárez Navarro in two sets at the Australian open this morning. The decisive victory will advance the 18-year-old Pole to the third round, where she will face 23-year-old Croatian Donna Vekić, who is currently ranked 19th in the world. The third round match is scheduled for Saturday, January 25 with the time yet to be announced.
Yesterday, the Polish wunderkind saw off Hungarian Timea Babos to progress to the second round of the competition. Unfortunately, Wednesday saw the other Polish hopeful, 22-year-old Hubert Hurkacz, eliminated at the hands of 30-year-old Australian John Millman.
We haven’t seen the last of Hurkacz, however, as he and his Canadian partner Vasek Pospisil will be facing the British duo of Jamie Murray and Neil Skupski in round 1 of the Men’s Doubles tomorrow.
