Radio Gdansk English News: Polish charities appeal for aid to Syria

Polska Akcja Humanitarna (PAH) has issued an urgent appeal for donations to aid Syrian refugees in the northwestern province of Idlib. Air raids in the past weeks have forced thousands to flee to the rebel-controlled province, straining resources in the already overcrowded refugee camps there.
The ongoing civil war in Syria has already forced over 5 million people to escape abroad, with hundreds of thousands left homeless inside Syria after being forced to flee from war-ravaged regions like Aleppo.

According to PAH, Some 80,000 internally displaced persons, many of them children, are sleeping rough on the streets or in fields despite the harsh winter weather and a lack of basic commodities or facilities.

Along with the Polish Medical Mission and the Polish Center for International Aid, PAH is appealing for donations to assist those in need. Details on the fundraising effort can be found on the Polish Humanitarian Action’s website at www.pah.org.pl

Mining company set to strike it rich

A Canadian mining company has discovered deposits of silver and copper worth an estimated EUR 56 billion (USD 60 billion) in the western Polish province of Lubuskie. According to Stanisław Speczik, the CEO of the company which discovered the lode, the deposits could contribute over PLN 1 billion a year to Polish state coffers as well as creating 8,600 new jobs.

Speczik’s company, the Miedź Copper Corporation, would like to start extracting the ore as early as 2024, but must first get approval from Polish authorities in the form of a mining license, as natural resources belong to the state under Polish law.

News of the discovery should bolster Poland’s burgeoning reputation as a country rich in mineral resources. According to the Polish National Geological Institute, Poland ranked second and fifth in the world in 2015 when it came to anticipated economic resources of silver and copper.

In a shocking upset, Poland beat reigning world champions Spain 80-69 yesterday in the EuroBasket 2021 qualifiers.

Fans hoping to enjoy a repeat of yesterday’s victory have a long wait ahead of them; the next game in the qualifiers is not until November 27, in Romania. The EuroBasket tournament is set to take place in September 2021, with games being hosted in Germany, the Czech Republic, Georgia, and Italy.

Sopot residents “sign up” to help local animal shelter

Sopot residents lined up yesterday to get their hands on old street signs as part of a charity fundraiser for the „Sopotkowo” animal shelter.

For a mere 40 złoty donation, residents could take home a piece of Sopot history in the form of a decommissioned street sign. According to one resident, the initiative is a “double bonus, because you can have a great souvenir and help animals at the same time.” The auction of the roughly 200 decommissioned street signs has already proven itself quite successful, with the shelter raising over PLN 3000 on Sunday and an additional PLN 2000 the previous week.

For anyone who missed out on yesterday’s fundraiser, the shelter has additional signs available for auction on its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/SchroniskoSopot/. Proceeds will be spent on the treatment and ongoing care of animals at the shelter.

Today will be partly cloudy and very windy with a high of 7°C, or 45°F and a chance for rain late in the evening. Overnight temps will hover around 2°C or 36°F, with additional rain expected throughout the day on Tuesday.
