Poland’s presidential elections, which were due to take place on May 10th  will now be held at a later date by postal ballot, the heads of two parties in the country’s ruling coalition have agreed . The declaration signalled that the two leaders had reached a compromise in a row that had divided the governing coalition. Poland’s president has launched a government scheme to build 200 railway stations across the country and help residents in areas with little access to public transport.

President Andrzej Duda, who is standing for re-election, said the initiative was worth 1 billion PLN. He added that the goal was to help combat “transport exclusion.” Launching the drive on Thursday, Duda said it was also an investment in environmental protection, arguing that rail is the most environmentally-friendly form of transport.

The plan to build 200 train stations is in an addition to an initiative called “Railway Plus”, for which the government has earmarked over PLN 5.5 billion which aims to restore train connections across the country.

The Polish government has said that it has paid out over 5 billion PLN so far under a massive package designed to protect jobs amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In an interview with Polskie Radio, the Family, Labour and Social Policy Minister said that 2.8 million applications have been submitted and the most in-demand form of support was an exemption from paying social security contributions. Unemployment in Poland rose to around 5.7 percent in April, one in eight Polish companies have laid off staff and almost one in five have cut wages as the coronavirus crisis buffets the country’s economy.

Three baby girls have been born in a hospital in Gdańsk this week in a very rare case of identical triplets which only happens in one in 100,000 pregnancies. 

TThe phenomenon happens when a fertilized egg splits into two and then one of the eggs then splits into two again, creating three identical, fertilized eggs. The three girls, Ida, Iga and Inka, were delivered by caesarian section and weigh between 2 and 2.5 kilograms each and are doing well.

Due to the coronavirus, the father has not yet been able to see his darling daughters.
