The World Health Organisation has expressed concern about the increasing spread of coronavirus in areas outside Europe and Asia. The agency yesterday reported the highest daily increase in worldwide cases since the outbreak began in December last year. According to the WHO, 106,000 new cases were reported over 24 hours.
The total number of cases is now approaching 5 million as countries in the Americas and Africa begin to see rapid growth of virus as was seen Europe in March and April.
But there is finally some good news concerning another virus outbreak, as the Democratic Republic of Congo has now discharged it’s last known Ebola patient, if no new cases are found in the coming 35 days, the Congo Ebola outbreak, started in 2018, can be finally declared over.
British experts to work on Central Transport Hub.
British experts are to assist in the designing of the Poland’s new super-airport and transport hub after the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding yesterday.
Under the agreement signed by the British Ambassador and Poland’s Deputy Infrastructure Minister, British consultants will contribute to the design of the air, sharing experience gained on other mega-projects in Seoul, Beijing, Singapore, and Istanbul.
Combining air, rail, and road links, the new Solidarity Transport Hub is set to become the new centre of travel across Poland, as well as becoming a new international hub airport.
PM: Poland could secure better international position post-coronavirus.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has said Poland could find itself in a stronger international position in the post-coronavirus world.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Mr Morawiecki said that as the world reorganises international supply chains, „Poland could secure a position even better before the crisis”.
Earlier this month, experts at the World Economic Forum predicted that producers could want to bring production away from China and closer to home after coronavirus highlighted weaknesses in existing global supply chains.
Gdynia Film Festival postponed.
The 45th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia has been officially postponed until 2021.
The annual festival celebrating Polish cinema had been due to take place in September, but organisers have now announced that no festival will take place this year. All of this year’s entries will be entered into next year’s competition.
30-years of local government.
Towns and cities across Poland are preparing to mark 30 years since the return of local government.
May 27th marks Local Government Day in Poland, celebrating the first municipal elections on that day in 1990.
During the communist period, local government was strictly curtailed between 1950 and 1990 when Poland’s first non-communist government restored municipal councils.
