Radio Gdansk News in English: Knight’s Cross from the Italian president for the Polish biologist

A Polish medical biologist has received the Knight’s Cross from Italian President Sergio Mattarella for his services in fighting the coronavirus epidemic.
Maciej Tarkowski, who has worked in Italy for 13 years, is a member of a six-strong research team from Milan’s Sacco hospital and the city’s university, which at the end of February isolated the Italian strain of the coronavirus. Tarkowski has said that thanks to the isolation of the Italian coronavirus strain it would be possible to establish how it differs from the Chinese pathogen. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has won a parliamentary vote of confidence in his conservative government with 235 votes to back the motion of confidence, versus 219 against and two abstentions.

That result yesterday was expected since Poland’s ruling conservative Law and Justice Party and its allies have a majority in the lower house.

President Andrzej Duda said that he had suggested to the prime minister several days ago that he should ask for such a vote. Duda said the purpose of the move was to stop the parliamentary majority in his words “being hindered in efforts aiming to lead to the end of the coronavirus epidemic.” The opposition has recently called for a number of high-profile government ministers to be dismissed.
