Radio Gdansk English News: Election day in Poland

Polish citizens across the country and around the world will be voting in person or by mail today for a slate of 11 candidates for the Polish presidency. Under a set of rules approved by parliament and signed into law earlier this month, the election will be conducted via a mixed system of postal and traditional in-person voting. If no single candidate gets over 50% of the vote this round, under Polish election rules, a second round of elections will be held July 12.

Polls opened at 7:00 this morning will remain open until 21:00 this evening. A media blackout is currently in effect until after polls officially close, at which point Radio Gdańsk will be posting updated results.

Call for pandemic monodramas

The Theatrum Gedanense Foundation and Teatr w Oknie in Gdańsk are currently accepting applications for the third edition of their “Monoteatr” competition, which will be based on the theme of the coronavirus pandemic.

A select panel of jurors will choose eight individual finalists whose artistic statements best encapsulate the experience of living through the pandemic. According to Magdalena Hajdysz of the Gdańsk Shakespeare Theatre, jurors are looking for works that not only address feelings of isolation, insecurity, and uncertainty but also demonstrate the need to maintain social connections and stay hopeful.

The competition is open from now until July 31, with finalists receiving a cash prize as well as technical support to professionally record their monodrama for the online competition in October.
