Radio Gdansk News in English: Russian opposition leader Navalny in hospital with suspected poisoning

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was admitted to hospital in Siberia on Thursday suffering symptoms of what his spokeswoman called poisoning, after his aircraft made an emergency landing. Navalny, 44, is unconscious and in intensive care after he started feeling unwell on a flight returning to Moscow. In an incident last year Navalny suffered an acute allergic reaction which one doctor said could have resulted from poisoning with an unknown chemical.

Navalny, a lawyer and anti-corruption activist, has served several stints in jail in recent years for organizing anti-Kremlin protests. The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that Russia’s were politically motivated and violated his human rights, a ruling Moscow called questionable.

Poland’s foreign minister, Jacek Czaputowicz, has stepped down from his role as Poland’s top diplomat, the Polish foreign ministry announced on Thursday.

The decision came after he indicated earlier this year that he would resign to make room for a new face. Czaputowicz took over as Poland’s foreign minister in January 2018 to replace Witold Waszczykowski in a sweeping government reshuffle. His resignation comes after the country’s Health Minister announced on Tuesday that he was also quitting. The chairman of the foreign affairs committee in the lower house of parliament is to take over the position of foreign minister and the head of Poland’s National Health Fund will take over as health minister.
