Radio Gdansk News in English: The Polish national football team on their way for their first official Euro 2020 match

The Polish national football team departed Gdańsk yesterday afternoon on their way to St. Petersburg for their first official Euro 2020 match today against Slovakia.

Today’s match kicks off at 18:00 Warsaw time, with Poland looking to make their mark at the European championships after a disappointing 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The Polish side goes into the match missing several key players, including strikers Krzysztof Piątek and Arkadiusz Milik, both of whom have been sidelined by injuries.

After today’s match, the Polish national team will travel to Seville to face Spain next Saturday before returning to St. Petersburg for a match against Sweden on June 23.

NATO leaders hope to open a new chapter in transatlantic relations at the summit, agreeing to focus on tackling climate change for the first time as well as addressing the rise of China’s military and cybersecurity threats originating from Russia.

Described as a „pivotal moment” by NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, the summit aims to turn the page on four tense years with Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump, who shook confidence in the Western alliance by calling it „obsolete.”

For the 30 allies meeting in Brussels, diplomats say nothing could be further from the truth, looking to the nuclear-armed alliance founded in 1949 to help deal with threats from extreme weather and climate change to Russian attempts to undermine Western democracies through covert attacks.

Russia’s efforts to divide the West are likely to run through discussions, diplomats said, ahead of a meeting between Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday in Geneva.

As in previous years, conference participants are expected to work out a set of recommendations for financial and economic policymakers. The event is being held virtually and runs from today until Wednesday. An in-person version of the event is scheduled to be held September 13-15 in Sopot.

Krystyna Chojnowska-Liskiewicz, who made history as the first woman to complete a solo circumnavigation of the globe, passed away over the weekend at the age of 84.

The captain was known primarily for her love of the sea and sailing, which she took part in and actively promoted throughout her life. After an aborted first attempt due to mechanical failures, her historic round-trip cruise began on March 28, 1976, in Las Palmas, Canary Islands. She covered 31,166 nautical miles on board the Mazurek, a yacht designed by her husband and custom-built in Poland.

Chojnowska-Liskiewicz’s travels took her across the Atlantic and the Panama Canal to the Pacific Ocean towards Australia and across the Indian Ocean to the Cape of Good Hope. She finished her circumnavigation on March 20, 1978, at 9 p.m. near the Cape Verde islands.

As the first woman to accomplish such a feat, she was accepted into the elite Explorers Club in New York, and her achievement was later entered in the Guinness Book of Records.
