Sirens will sound and all traffic will stop for a minute’s silence today to mark exactly 77 years since the Warsaw Uprising broke out on August 1, 1944.
Every year on this day, people in Warsaw stop at the sound of sirens and bells at exactly 5 p.m. to remember „W Hour,” the time when the insurgency began in the dark days of Nazi German occupation.
The bloody insurgency, also known as the Warsaw Rising, lasted 63 days before it was put down by better-equipped and more numerous Nazi German forces.
The heroic act of resistance saw the city of Warsaw razed to the ground and some 18,000 Polish fighters and 200,000 civilians killed.
In a special resolution in 2019, Polish lawmakers called the Warsaw Uprising “one of the most heroic and tragic Polish battles of World War II” and the largest military operation by any underground resistance movement in Nazi-occupied Europe.

Along with commemorations, public broadcaster Polish Radio has joined an annual effort to honor the fighters of Warsaw’s heroic 1944 uprising and tell their story to younger generations.
The #BohaterOn campaign aims to commemorate the heroes of the Polish capital’s bloody World War II revolt and educate the public about the significance of the event. As part of this year’s campaign, the public is encouraged to send thank-you messages and donations to veterans, among other initiatives.
In addition to raising awareness, the effort, now in its sixth year, aims to help surviving insurgents, most of whom are now well into their 80s and 90s, by raising funds for their everyday needs.
