The European Union has warned Russia it could „consider taking further steps” over Moscow’s alleged complicity in recent cyberattack campaigns in Germany and Poland.
A statement released yesterday by the EU’s High Representative on Foreign Affairs and Security Josep Borrell described the Russian-affiliated Ghostwriter campaign as threatening „our integrity and security, democratic values and principles and the core functioning of our democracies” by going after government officials and politicians, as well as members of the press and civil society.
According to the German government, the country’s upcoming elections have been among the recent targets of the attacks. US Cybersecurity company FireEye linked parts of the campaign to UNC1151, a group affiliated with the Russian secret service GRU.
The news comes just as Germans head to the polls today to elect a replacement for outgoing chancellor Angela Merkel, who is stepping down after 16 years as German Chancellor.

The 46th annual Polish Film Festival wrapped up in Gdynia last night with big wins for the films „All our fears” and „Leave no Traces.”
The directing duo Łukasz Ronduda and Łukasz Gutt took home the top Golden Lion award for their film „All our Fears,” a drama based on the biography of the graphic and visual artist Daniel Rycharski.
Known for his unique approach to „rural street art,” Rycharski’s artwork touches on intersecting themes of faith, religion, and the attitude of the Catholic Church towards LGBT people in Poland, themes touched on by director Łukasz Ronduda in his acceptance speech last night, where he welcomed the „opportunity… for dialogue and social change.”
The Silver Lion award went to „Let there be no traces” by Jan P. Matuszyński, while Łukasz Grzegorzek took home directorial honors for the film „My wonderful life.” Marcin Ciastoń took home best screenplay honors for his work on Piotr Domalewski’s „Hiacynt.”

In addition to awards and screenings at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, Director Jan P. Matuszyński’s drama „Leave No Traces” also hit cinemas nationwide over the weekend.
The film is based on real-life events surrounding Grzegorz Przemyk, a Warsaw high school student beaten to death by communist police in May 1983, during martial law imposed by the authorities to crush the Solidarity freedom movement.
Earlier this month, „Leave No Traces” was officially chosen as Poland’s entry for Best International Feature Film at the 2021 Academy Awards in the US, set for March 27, 2022.

After winning against Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk yesterday, Hubert Hurkacz has made it to the finals of the men’s singles at the Moselle Open tennis tournament in the French city of Metz.
Hurkacz, who is currently ranked world No. 13 and is the top seed in Metz, will now face Spain’s Pablo Carreño Busta in the final at 3:30 pm today.
Hurkacz will also be playing in the finals of the men’s doubles competition after he and Jan Zieliński beat Finland’s Henri Kontinen and Japan’s Ben McLachlan 6-4 6-4 yesterday. The Polish duo will face off against Hugo Nys of Moraco and Arthur Rinderknech of France at 4:50 pm this evening.

Iga Świątek wasn’t quite so lucky yesterday, losing 6-4, 7-6 to her Greek opponent Maria Sakkari yesterday in the semifinals of the Ostrava Open tennis tournament in the Czech Republic.
While not satisfied with her performance, Świątek reached out in person and on social media after the match to thank her fans for their support. Despite the loss, Świątek’s performance will reportedly push her up to fourth place in WTA rankings, to be announced on Monday.
She told fans she is now „taking care of her health” in preparation for the upcoming BNP Paribas/Indian Wells tournament in California on October 4–17, 2021.
