Poland’s foreign minister Zbigniew Rau has urged Russia to withdraw from Ukraine in a speech in his capacity as Chairman-in-Office of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Poland’s top diplomat was speaking at a two-day meeting of the OSCE in Vienna „on international co-operation to address violations of humanitarian law and human rights law” in the face of Russian aggression against Ukraine. Poland’s top diplomat stressed that the Kremlin’s attack had caused „the biggest refugee crisis in Europe since the Second World War.”

Poland holds the rotating presidency of the OSCE for the duration of 2022. Today is day 34 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Polish family and social policy minister has announced that some 17,000 Ukrainian women had started jobs in Poland after fleeing the Russian invasion.

She addressed the media after visiting a refugee-welcome centre in central Poland alongside the European Union Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights. She noted that more than 2.3 million people, mainly women and children, had crossed to Poland from Ukraine since the Russian assault began.

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda this month signed into law a measure to offer wide-ranging support to Ukrainians escaping the Russian attack on their country, which began on February 24th. The measure grants them legal residence in Poland and ensures access to education, healthcare and social benefits.

2021 marked the lowest number of deaths on European roads since before the pandemic in 2019.

The European Commission has published preliminary data on road fatalities in 2021 which shows that across Europe road fatalities dropped by around 13 percent overall. The figure was an increase of 1,000 deaths compared to the last year, but still represents almost 3,000 fewer deaths than in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic began which has skewed road traffic accident figures.

The largest decreases were recorded in Denmark, Belgium, Portugal and Poland which all recorded year on year decreases of more than 20%.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the „Fields of Hope” charity campaign which runs across Pomerania and raises funds for hospices. The famous yellow daffodils will also return to the streets.

This year volunteers will be handing out daffodil stickers rather than actual flowers. The change is related to the increase in flower prices. During the last two editions, the amount collected dropped by around 50 percent, probably as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The campaign runs from March 28th to April 10th. On April 3rd, volunteers with cans will be collecting money in front of churches and shops in the Tri-City and Puck.
