The Polish government has announced it will extend support for another 60 days for people who house refugees fleeing from the war in Ukraine. The policy move was announced on Thursday by the government’s commissioner for war refugees.
People who host refugees from Ukraine receive PLN 40 per person per day, that’s about EUR 9 per person per day. The allowance was originally offered for a period of up to 60 days following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24th but will now be extended to June 25th. He estimated that around 600,000 Ukrainian refugees were staying with Polish families.

The Kyiv Symphony Orchestra is in Warsaw to perform at Warsaw’s National Philharmonic Hall. The event is the the ensemble’s first public appearance since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It comes as part of the orchestra’s 10-day stay in Warsaw, organized by Poland’s National Philharmonic and the National Institute of Music and Dance.
The Ukrainian musicians, some of whom arrived in Poland with members of their families, were offered wide-ranging assistance, including accommodation, rehearsal venues and psychological counselling. From Warsaw, the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra will go to the central Polish city of Łódź for a concert tomorrow, before embarking on a tour of Germany.

Data released by the Police in Pomerania has shown a sharp increase in the number of suicides and attempted suicides since 2019 among young people. In 2019 there were 66 attempted suicides and in 2021 the number rose to almost 300. The corresponding number of suicides has risen from 5 to 14.
A spokeswoman for the Psychiatric Hospital in Gdańsk says help is available and that on average between 3 and 12 children between the ages of 10 and 17 seek help with a mental crisis each day. Among the explanations for the rise are the isolation and anxiety brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic.

And finally, a II World War torpedo containing around 200kg of explosive material has been neutralized after it was discovered off the coast of Gdynia this week.
The torpedo was lying in about 30 metres of water around 5 km off Babie Doły in Northern Gdynia. The neutralization was carried out by controlled explosion conducted by mine divers from the 13th Minesweeper Division, part of the 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla, with support from the crew of the Wigry minesweeper.
