Poland’s foreign ministry joined world leaders in sending condolences to Turkey after at least eight people died and numerous others were injured in an explosion in Istanbul on Sunday.

According to a report from Reuters, eight people were killed and 81 others were wounded yesterday when a blast rocked a busy pedestrian street in central Istanbul in what Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan called a terrorist attack.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of the victims of today’s explosion in Istanbul,” the Polish foreign ministry said in a tweet on Sunday.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and their families,” the message continued. “We would like to assure the authorities of Turkey and its citizens of our solidarity.”

Turkish police have blamed Kurdish separatists for the bombing, with Al Jazeera reporting that
22 people had been arrested as of Monday morning.

Authorities in Kherson thanked Polish companies for their support after using a platform provided by Emital SA to bring back local TV and radio transmissions.

Ukraine’s State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection announced over the weekend that it had re-established the signal for a local TV channel, and radio broadcasts in Kherson and surrounding areas, thus enabling residents to receive verified information on the war developments.

“We managed to pull it off thanks to a powerful new transmitter that Polish friends from Emitel SA sent to Ukraine’s Broadcasting, Radiocommunications, and Television Corporation (BRT),” the service wrote in a press release.

The release described how experts from Emitel, the main operator of terrestrial radio and television infrastructure in Poland, had installed a 4kW transmitter in the neighboring Mykolaiv Oblast a few days before the western part of the Kherson Oblast was liberated,

In his nightly address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that Russian troops had “destroyed all the critical infrastructure” in the Kherson region, including “communications, water, heat, electricity.” According to Zelenskyy, local authorities had already dealt with some 2,000 mines, trip wires, and unexploded shells in the area.

“[Russians] everywhere have the same goal: to humiliate people as much as possible,” Zelenskyy continued, “but we will restore everything, believe me.”

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene after receiving a call sometime after 1:00 on Sunday morning. Five cars were reportedly burned out, and two had been set on fire during the night. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage is not yet known.

A similar incident occurred several weeks ago in Przymorze, when four cars parked on Chłopska Street were burned in what police now believe to be an arson attack. The perpetrator in that case has not yet been apprehended.

A friendly match against Chile ahead of the World Cup will not take place at Warsaw’s National Stadium as planned due to a defect discovered in the structure of the stadium.

The stadium was closed on Friday with immediate effect after an annual check-up revealed a growing crack in one of the metal structures supporting the roof.

Sports minister Kamil Bortniczuk said on Saturday that the venue’s architects and builders had advised an immediate closure due to urgent repairs.

The National Stadium, Poland’s largest sporting arena, was due to host a Poland-Chile football friendly on Wednesday. Poland’s Football Association said the game itself was not endangered and would be moved to the Legia Warszawa Stadium.

The match will be held at 18:00 on Wednesday and will be the last test for Poland’s national squad before they leave for the World Cup in Qatar on Thursday.
