Pope Francis has asked Italy’s Cardinal Matteo Zuppi to head a peace mission to try and help end the war in Ukraine, according to reports from the Vatican.
A Vatican spokesperson said Pope Francis hoped the operation could “initiate paths of peace, something never abandoned by the Holy Father,” according to Vatican News.
A Vatican diplomatic source quoted by Reuters later said Cardinal Zuppi will try to meet separately with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Cardinal Zuppi, 67, has strong ties to the Sant’ Egidio Community, a Rome-based peace and justice group that brokered a deal in 1992 to end the civil war in Mozambique. During the 15 years of that war, roughly one million people were killed an additional four million others were displaced, according to Reuters.
Today is day 453 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

An estimated 15,000 Lechia Gdańsk fans were on hand with “flares, smoke, and tears” to bid club legend Flávio Paixão and Ekstraklasa farewell on Saturday night at Polsat Plus Arena in Gdańsk.
The night ended more positively than expected after midfielder Maciej Gajos scored a goal in the 98th minute, giving new coach David Badia his first win in the 1:0 match against powerhouse Legia Warszawa.
Paixão scored earlier in the match, but the goal was disallowed as he was offside. The 38-year-old was the most effective non-Polish player in the history of the league, scoring 108 goals during his tenure in Ekstraklasa.
The 1:0 victory was a bittersweet moment for Lechia Gdańsk fans, as it marked Paixão’s departure and the team’s last match in Ekstraklasa before relegation to I Liga.
