President Duda Calls Poles to Vote, Results to be Announced Tuesday

President Andrzej Duda addressed the nation in a televised speech Thursday night urging citizens to make use of their “right and privilege” and participate in the elections on Sunday. The President continued to stress the importance of the right to vote, recalling the generations of Poles who had fought and made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve that right, and how the votes of the people can and will shape Poland’s future.

Friday will be the last day for both election and referendum campaigning before the election is held on Sunday. The State Electoral Commission (PKW) has issued guidance stating that any form of campaigning: rallies, speeches, marches, and advertising, are all banned and that violating the ban could result in criminal charges. Election results are to be publicized by noon on Tuesday.

Government Warns of Disinformation After Fake Texts Sent Out to Public

The Polish Government issued a warning to citizens on Thursday concerning disinformation campaigns after fake messages were sent out making campaign promises. Some had received fake messages saying that the ruling Law and Justice Party were promising free funerals for pensioners.

The Law and Justice Party denied making any such promises and stated that the messages were to be disregarded. Security official Stanisław Zaryn alleged that the fake messages could be the latest attempt at Russia’s interference in telecommunications and state affairs of eastern EU countries.

New Military Vessel Enters Service in Gdańsk

A new patrol ship, SG-301, named after General Jósef Haller, was put into service with the Maritime Branch of the Border Guard at Westerplatte, Gdańsk on Thursday October 12. The vessel will be the most modern in the Maritime Border Guard, serving to protect the EU borders in both the Baltic and Mediterranean Seas while participating in EU member state operations.

Poland Defeats Faroe Islands in 2024 Euro Qualifier

In a promising debut for new coach Michał Pobierz, Poland’s National Football Team emerged victorious away from home against the Faroe Islands 2-0 in their capital of Tórshavn. The goals were scored by Sebastian Symanski and Adam Buksa.

Poland is now ranked 30th in the world according to FIFA, and will be facing off against Moldova in their next qualifier on Sunday, October 15.
