President Andrzej Duda spent Thursday and Friday visiting Poland’s borders with Belarus and Kaliningrad respectively to assess Poland’s border security. The President described the situation at the border with Belarus as „challenging” as an illegal crossing had been attempted just hours after his arrival.

The President stated „Unfortunately the situation is normal and such cases continue to occur here, and they demonstrate how necessary this barrier is.” The President went on to praise the extraordinary dedication of Poland’s border guard and described their service as „truly invaluable,” remarking how dangerous the situation would be for Poland and the EU if such measures were not taken.

President Duda then visited the border with Kaliningrad to unveil an electronic barrier at its control center in the town of Kętrzyn. The barrier will consist of over 3,000 cameras and motion sensors. The President emphasized the necessity of these measures due to the „hybrid attack” at these borders, describing them as „undoubtedly coordinated with Russian authorities.”

Following the arrests of two Legia Warsaw players and the apparent rough handling of the rest of the football club, the Polish government will be seeking consequences for those responsible according to deputy foreign minister Paweł Jabłonski.

Reportedly after the match against AZ Alkmaar, the Legia Warsaw club were prevented from boarding their bus out of the stadium with Dutch officials allegedly telling them to wait until spectators had left the venue. In the following minutes, the Polish team were roughly handled physically by Dutch Police, who even ended up arresting two players: Josué of Portugal and Radovan Pankow of Serbia.

Poland’s foreign ministry has successfully urged the Dutch ministry to fully cooperate in an investigation into the matter, along with Legia Warsaw planning to provide UEFA with a full report of the events.
