Poland’s ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party will seek to form a coalition government with members of the centre-right Third Way alliance and the far-right Confederation group, following last month’s parliamentary election, the prime minister-designate has announced.

Mateusz Morawiecki made the announcement in an interview with the Fakt tabloid, published on Friday. He conceded that, although his Law and Justice party won the October 15 election, he would „find it difficult to gain the support of a parliamentary majority” for his new Cabinet. He argued, however, that „voters expect Law and Justice to try and form a new government.”

Poland’s prime minister has said that member states of the European Union should retain the right to make key decisions and determine their policy priorities.

Mateusz Morawiecki made the statement after an informal meeting with a group of EU leaders in Zagreb, Croatia, on Thursday. Poland’s prime minister held talks with his Croatian counterpart, the Italian and Maltese Prime Ministers, as well as European Council President Charles Michel.

The working dinner in the Croatian capital focused on the EU’s strategic agenda, according to the Polish Prime Minister’s Office. The Polish prime minister said the EU was „at a crossroads” and had to decide whether „to issue more and more regulations” about the economy, migration or foreign affairs, or whether „to focus on crucial challenges and for member states to help each other.”

Poland is set to become the first US ally to manufacture advanced radar components for the American-made Patriot missile defence system.

During talks in Washington, representatives from Poland’s Ministry of Defence and the Polish Armaments Group engaged with officials from the US government and Raytheon, a major arms producer that is now part of RTX Corporation.

The negotiations were successful, despite the US tendency to restrict sharing its latest technology with even its closest allies. The breakthrough is particularly noteworthy as the Polish arms industry has long sought access to American radar technology.

And finally, construction of the incineration plant in Gdańsk’s Szadółki district has begun, it has been announced.

The Clean Energy Port authority has advised local residents that they may see smoke rising from the incinerator chimney and hear loud noises due to the work being carried out in the coming weeks. The authority has reassured residents that the smoke is water vapor and will not have any negative effects on health.

The installation is scheduled to be ready at the end of the first quarter of next year and it should help in reducing the noxious smells that emanate from the plant which cause a nuisance to nearby districts of the city.
