Head of WADA responds to US criticism
The Polish head of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has criticized a US report accusing the independent monitoring agency of failing to enact adequate reforms or take swift action following the Russian doping scandal.
Witold Bańka, a competitive sprinter and Poland’s former sports minister, was elected President of the World Anti-Doping Agency in May 2019. Since this time, he has overseen efforts by WADA to respond to the Russian doping scandal by banning Russia from major international sporting competitions for four years.
The US Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) submitted a report critical of WADA’s efforts and US participation to the US Congress late last month. In an interview with PAP last Saturday, Bańka characterized the US report as merely “an attempt to undermine WADA as a global regulator for anti-doping by framing the agency as allegedly not up to the task.”
He went on to note that if two strong powers, namely the US and Russia, are both criticizing WADA, this is actually evidence that the agency is functioning appropriately as an independent organization and is capable of responding to criticism.
