Radio Gdansk News in English: Poland voices support for Belarusian freedom hopes

Poland has voiced support for Belarusians in their fight for freedom, with top Polish officials meeting with Belarus oppositionists, and solidarity marches being held in Polish cities.

Public broadcaster Polish Radio is also set to launch a special news service for listeners in neighbouring Belarus, where post-election protests have grown against longtime strongman leader Alexander Lukashenko. The management of Polish Radio says news broadcasts in Belarusian on Polish Radio 1 will help keep listeners beyond Poland’s eastern border informed about what is happening in their country amid limited access to reliable information.

In a tweet in English, the prime minister wrote that he was concerned to hear of the alleged poisoning and the apparent refusal to allow him to leave the country for treatment. Navalny, a fierce critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was fighting for his life in a Siberian hospital on Thursday after drinking tea that allies said they think was laced with poison. A rare and magnificent amber chess set from the 1600s has been returned tp Gdańsk after being bought by the Gdańsk museum.

The stunning set would likely have been made by a local craftsman in around 1690 and would have been sold as a highly valuable and valued ornament. It is only one of four such works of art in the world and had been sitting in an attic in a scottish castle before being bought by the musuem for an eye watering 2.4 million złoty. The Baltic coast is well known as a source of amber and Gdańsk boasts a healthy market in the production and selling of amber jewellery and ornaments.
