Polish President Andrzej Duda said on Friday he has submitted a bill to allow terminations of foetuses with serious defects which would have been born dead.
Duda’s proposal could prove a way of defusing street protests amid a record rise in coronavirus infections in Poland. In a statement released on Friday, Duda said that he understood the concerns of women following the ruling by the country’s top court last week.

Amid a record surge in coronavirus infections, Polish cemeteries will be closed from Saturday to Monday, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has announced.
All Saints’ Day on November 1 and All Souls’ Day on November 2 are when millions of Poles usually visit the graves of their loved ones, often travelling hundreds of kilometres to their home towns. Giving the reasons behind the decision he said, “We do not want to cause increased risk as a result of large groups of people gathering in cemeteries, on public transport. We waited before making this decision, believing that the number of [coronavirus] cases may decline.” The decision has been criticised by the Mayor of Gdańsk.

The transport ministers of nine EU countries including Poland have said in a joint statement that controversial new road transport rules are incompatible with EU law.
The ministers added that the regulations would lead to a hike in the prices of both transport services and goods, which would in turn decrease the bloc’s global economic competitiveness. All of the nine countries except Latvia and Estonia have already filed official complaints against the rules with the EU Court of Justice.
