Radio Gdansk News in English: Polish PM urges Germany to abandon Nord Stream 2 pipeline

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Thursday called on Berlin to abandon the contested Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, warning that the project is dangerous for the EU.

Morawiecki told reporters after holding talks in Warsaw with the Slovenian Prime Minister that Nord Stream 2 „is a German-Russian project that destabilizes Europe and reduces Europe’s security.” Nord Stream 2, designed to double the capacity of the existing Nord Stream undersea gas pipeline, is expected to send around 55 billion cubic metres of Russian natural gas a year directly to Germany under the Baltic Sea while bypassing the Baltic states, Poland and Ukraine.

NATO said on Thursday it was worried about Russian „destabilising actions” abroad after the Czech Republic said two Russian spies accused of a poisoning in Britain in 2018 were behind a fatal explosion at a Czech ammunition depot four years earlier.

The dispute, which has led to tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions in Prague and Moscow, is the sharpest between the two countries since the end of the Communist era in 1989 and comes at a time of acute tensions in Russia’s relations with the West.

Despite economic woes caused by the coronavirus pandemic, Poland remains one of the world’s most attractive destinations for foreign investors, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday.

He cited data from the Financial Times which shows that Poland was the world’s third-largest market for foreign direct investment in February. Google’s CEO this month thanked Morawiecki for partnering in the launch of a new data centre in Warsaw. The US tech giant is expected to invest some USD 2 billion in the new cloud computing hub in the Polish capital.

Environmental campaigners who are trying to save greenbelt land next to the beach in Gdańsk Brzeżno have announced that they intend to file a complaint against the president of Gdańsk over the way development plan for Brzeżno has been handled by authorities.

The „Green Wave Tricity” group will file a complaint related to the lack of public consultations around a plan to build hotels and gastronomic facilities on a currently forested area next to Brzeżno beach that, for comparison, would be bigger than the footprint currently taken by the Galeria Bałtycka shopping development.
