RG News in English: Poland vs. Sweden tonight | Polish cyberattacks on NATO agenda | Firefighters busy as storms hit Poland | Gdańsk universities top Polish rankings

Poland’s national football team is set to take on Sweden tonight in their final group-stage match of the Euro 2020 tournament.

Sweden is currently at the top of Group E with four points, ahead of Slovakia with three points and Spain in third place with two. With only one point after a disappointing opening loss to Slovakia and a draw with top-ranked Spain, Poland needs to defeat Sweden tonight to advance to the tournament’s knockout stage.

The Polish side goes into Wednesday’s match missing several key players, including strikers Krzysztof Piątek and Arkadiusz Milik, both of whom have been ruled out of Euro 2020 by injuries.

The match is set to kick off at 18:00 CEST in St. Petersburg.

Polish security services have linked recent cyberattacks to Russian secret services, according to an official statement released on Tuesday.

Stanisław Żaryn, a spokesman for Poland’s security services chief, said the findings of Polish counterintelligence units “show that the target of the recent social engineering attacks was over 4,000 accounts of Polish e-mail users,” which included over 100 accounts used by Polish public officials.

Victims reportedly included current and former local and national government officials from various political backgrounds, as well as media and NGO workers.

In a statement in English on the gov.pl website, Żaryn went on to report that “information obtained so far indicates that the actions of the UNC1151 group…are part of the ‘Ghostwriter’ campaign, the aim of which is to destabilize the political situation in the countries of Central Europe.”

The cyberattacks against Poland will reportedly be discussed at a meeting of NATO’s North Atlantic Council today in Brussels.

Polish firefighters were called out almost 1,700 times on Tuesday after torrential rain, hail, and fierce winds lashed areas across Poland.

In the western city of Poznań, part of the roof of a sports hall collapsed, and fire crews were called in to deal with flooding in five hospitals and a cathedral in the city. Intense downpours turned many Poznań streets into fast-moving streams.

In other parts of the country, winds uprooted trees and disrupted power supplies. As a result, over 23,000 people were left without electricity, most of them in the central Mazovia region, Grzegorz Świszcz from the Government Security Centre said on Tuesday evening.

Here in Pomerania, firefighters were called out several dozen times to deal with flooded basements and broken trees. According to rescuers, the most heavily affected areas were the counties of Kościerzyna, Starogard, and Gdańsk. Two buildings were also struck by lightning, including a house in Rębiechowo and a primary school in the village of Czerniewo, but there were no reports of serious injuries as a result of the extreme weather.
