A Polish treasure hunter has unearthed a stash of medieval French coins that are believed to have been minted more than 1,100 years ago and that left local and international researchers dumbfounded.
A number of theories have been floated to explain how the coins got to their location, including a theory that the coins might have been part of a hefty ransom in silver to pay off the Vikings who in the 9th century threatened to ransack Paris. The discovery was made last year near the village of Biskupiec in Poland’s north-eastern region.
