Ahead of the games, Poland’s Chef de Mission for the Tokyo Games said that it was realistic to expect that Polish athletes would bring home up to 15 medals from Japan. At the Rio Summer Olympics in 2016, Poland won 11 medals, two gold, three silver and six bronze. At the London Olympics in 2012, Team Poland scooped 10 medals, three gold, two silver and five bronze.

Poland and Lithuania have called on European institutions to help them deal with a surge in illegal migration from Belarus over their borders, as tensions between EU countries and Minsk continues to grow.

On Thursday, Poland accused Belarus of sending a growing number of migrants over the border in retaliation for Warsaw’s decision this week to give refuge to Krystsina Tsimanouskaya, a Belarusian athlete who refused to return home from the Tokyo Olympics. European Union home affairs ministers and representatives of the EU border agency Frontex and Europol are set to discuss the issue on Aug. 18, a letter by Slovenia to EU diplomats seen by Reuters showed.

Over half a million foreigners in Poland were issued a long-term residence permit, the country’s Office for Foreigners has announced.

Ukrainian nationals accounted for the largest proportion of foreigners who were issued the permits in Poland last year, at 280,000, followed by Belarusians at 34,000 and Germans at 20,000. Russian nationals are also a large group of foreigners living in Poland, followed by citizens of Vietnam, India, Georgia, China and Great Britain. An office’s spokesman told Poland’s said that mostly young foreigners decide to settle down in Poland. He also added that foreigners most often choose big cities, which offer job opportunities and universities.

Rescuers have been searching for a man who is suspected of falling overboard from a ferry in the Baltic Sea on Saturday evening.

A Swedish coast guard plane and a sea rescue vessel are combing the area of ​​the potential disappearance of a man who probably fell overboard the Polish passenger ferry „Nova Star”. A spokesman for the Swedish coast guard said that „It’s a gigantic search area, so it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack.” The missing man, a man in his fifties, was last seen at night, when the ferry was near Gotland, on its way to Nynäshamn from Gdansk. The man’s friends reported him missing before noon. The last time they saw him, he was drunk. His nationality was not specified.
