Radio Gdansk News in English: No plans for lockdown | Tarnów voted one of Europe’s “prettiest towns” | Lechia triumphs over Zagłebie | Thousands protest against abortion restrictions

Despite the growing number of coronavirus cases across the country, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki confirmed his government is not considering a lockdown. Speaking at a press conference outside a field hospital in Wrocław yesterday, Morawiecki claimed the government was seeking to “balance” its response to the pandemic by securing more hospital beds and ensuring access to vaccinations.

Earlier in the week, the Polish Ministry of Health reported that only 3 percent of the more than 41,000 Covid-19 deaths have occurred in fully vaccinated people, proving the efficacy of vaccination efforts.

Poland on Saturday reported 15, 190 new coronavirus infections and 186 additional deaths related to Covid-19, with the highest number of cases (3,470) in Warsaw and the province of Mazowieckie. In Pomerania, 718 new cases were reported yesterday, with one additional death related to the disease.

The city of Tarnów in southern Poland has been included in the list of the 15 “prettiest small towns” in Europe, as compiled by US broadcaster CNN.

According to the website, Tarnów’s Old Town square “is a glorious mix of architectural styles, there’s a beautiful gothic church and a lot of Jewish heritage…you’ll find it still has that small-town feel, with pretty medieval buildings that give a feel of how nearby Krakow was before mass tourism arrived.”

Located some 75 km east of the historic city of Kraków, Tarnów currently has a population of just over 100,000.

Other European towns on CNN’s list included the Tuscan hill town of Anghiari in Italy, the seaside resort of Pirano in Slovenia, and the historic city of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina, home to the iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge).

Lechia Gdańsk triumphed in their Ekstraklasa League match against Zagłębie Lubin last night, largely due to the efforts of midfielder Marco Terrazzino.

The match started poorly for the White and Greens, with Zagłebie scoring off a penalty kick at the 6-minute mark. The score remained in the visiting team’s favor until well into the second half due to missed shots and incomplete passes by Lechia.

All that changed when Terrazzino was subbed on at the 53-minute mark. With an assist by Mateusz Żukowski, Terrazzino was able to tie the game at the 84-minute mark. He then repeated his heroic feat at the 94-minute mark, assisted by team captain Flávio Paixão.

The win keeps Lechia within striking distance of the top spot in the Ekstraklasa league, tied with Lech Poznań and ahead of Pogon Szczecin and Raków.

Thousands of protestors gathered across Poland over the weekend to protest strict abortion laws following the death of a 30-year-old woman due to complications during pregnancy.

The woman, identified only as “Izabela,” was taken to a hospital in the southern town of Pszczyna after her water broke during her 22nd week of pregnancy. While in the hospital, she suffered septic shock and died. Relatives claim doctors delayed terminating the risky pregnancy for too long, which directly contributed to Izabela’s death.

Izabela’s story has reignited debates over abortion in Poland and sparked a new wave of demonstrations across the country, including protests in over 70 cities and towns across Poland on Saturday.

According to reports by the Polish Press Agency (PAP), the Pszczyna hospital announced it had suspended two doctors on duty at the time of the woman’s death, and prosecutors and National Health Fund officials are currently investigating the case.
