Potential strike action by Polish air controllers has been temporarily averted this week after a deal was reached with the Polish government. A crisis has been brewing for a number of weeks over proposed pay increases for the Polish air traffic controllers and strike action was on the cards which would have brought chaos to the Polish air industry, grounding many flights.

One of the leaders of the air-traffic controllers’ trade union, told reporters that a temporary agreement would remain in force until July 10th. In the meantime, the two sides will work to thrash out a final settlement, government officials said.

3 million refugees from the war in Ukraine have now fled to Poland according to figures released by the Polish Border Guard this week. „Since February 24, around 3 million people have crossed into Poland from Ukraine,” it said in a tweet.

The vast majority of refugees are Ukrainian, with other countries also being represented in the figures. Poland’s President Andrzej Duda last month signed into law a measure to offer wide-ranging support to Ukrainians escaping the Russian invasion of their country, which began on February 24th. The measure grants them legal residence in Poland and ensures access to education, healthcare and social benefits.
