A slew of events were held across Poland yesterday to mark the Feast of the Polish Armed Forces and commemorate the historic 1920 victory of Polish troops over the Russian Bolsheviks during the Battle of Warsaw.

Speaking during celebrations in Warsaw yesterday, Polish President Andrzej Duda hailed the historic battle and praised Polish soldiers for their excellent service, underscoring that the world has found itself in the throes of an unprecedented situation following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. „We haven’t experienced such difficult times for many decades of Polish history,” he added.

Poland’s Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak also drew direct parallels between the historic Polish struggle to defeat the invading Bolshevik army and the ongoing war in Ukraine. „The years go by, but one thing remains constant,” he remarked, „whenever Russia wants to rebuild its empire, it’s always an empire of evil.”

The Battle of Warsaw, fought from August 12 to 25 in 1920, preserved Poland’s newly regained independence after World War I and served as a bulwark against the Bolshevik revolution spreading into Western Europe.

Yesterday marked day 173 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

A flight leaving Gdańsk for the Canary Islands had to make an emergency landing in Warsaw yesterday evening due to mechanical issues.

According to Gdańsk airport spokesperson, the Enter Air aircraft took off at 18:00 from the Gdańsk airport bound for the Canary Islands. Shortly after take-off, however, the crew reported a mechanical problem and announced that they wanted to return to Gdańsk.

The plane then spent some time circling over the Bay of Gdańsk in order to burn off enough fuel to land. It was then decided that the flight would be diverted to Warsaw due to intense storms in the Trójmiasto area.

The plane eventually landed around 20:00 at the Frederic Chopin airport in Warsaw.

The Municipal Family Support Center (MOPR) in Gdańsk is reminding parents to submit their requests to join the free school meals program to guarantee availability at the start of the school year.

Any family whose income is less than PLN 1080 per person is eligible to join the „Meal on Wheels at school and at home” program, which entitles each child to a free lunch at school.

The increased income criterion is welcome information for many parents and a notable example of cooperation between national and local governments. The national government program grants free lunches to children from families whose income per person does not exceed PLN 900. Thanks to additional funds provided by the city, slightly more residents of Gdańsk will be able to take advantage of the program this year.

Applications can be submitted to any of the social service centers in Gdańśk. For a complete list of MOPR locations and a list of necessary documents, visit >>>HERE.
