Polish lawmakers have approved a bill that will help people with their heating costs this winter.

Under the bill, prices on heating from networks will be capped to protect household energy bills. Moreover, households that use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for heating will be eligible for a one-off benefit of PLN 500 (EUR 106), and those that use wood chips will be offered PLN 1,000 (EUR 212). Meanwhile, families using heating oil will receive a one-off allowance of PLN 2,000 (EUR 424), and those that use pellets as fuel will be eligible for PLN 3,000 (EUR 636). The bill was passed on a vote of 293 to 22, with 112 abstentions. The draft legislation now heads to the Senate (upper house) floor.

The Polish president is set to visit parts of Africa next week.

The president will visit Nigeria, the Ivory Coast and Senegal where he intends to discuss food security amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and ways to counter Russian propaganda, among other things. Later this month, the Polish head of state will attend the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. “The president intends to listen closely to the African perspective before speaking at the UN General Assembly,”, a spokesperson said of the trip.

The Polish president and his wife are launching National Reading Day in Warsaw today with a recitation of extracts from „Ballads and Romances” by the Romantic poet Adam Mickiewicz.

The choice of work for this year’s nationwide readathon seemed to be obvious as 2022 has been designated the Year of Polish Romanticism. The publication of Mickiewicz’s Ballads and Romances two centuries ago is regarded as the beginning of the Romantic period in Polish literature, and its manifesto. Launched in 2012, the National Reading campaign involves public readings of outstanding works of Polish literature.

And finally, a quick thinking Police operator has likely saved the life of a Gdańsk resident who was taken ill…in Germany.

The 45 year-old man was taken ill will in Germany and when his brother, who was with him, was unable to summon help locally, he called 112 in Gdańsk. The police operator acted quickly and managed to get a precise location of the man. She then called the main Bureau of International Police Co-operation who managed to reach German police and medical services who were quickly on the scene to provide assistance. The man is now fully recovered.
