Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is set to host his Japanese counterpart, Fumio Kishida, in Warsaw today after the latter made a surprise visit to Ukraine on Tuesday.

The two prime ministers will meet at the Presential Palace today to discuss bilateral relations and further support for Ukraine, nearly a year after their last meeting on March 24, 2022.

Polish government spokesman Piotr Müller told reporters on Tuesday that the talks would focus on “the prospects for the development of Polish-Japanese cooperation, especially in business and investment.”

Müller described Japan as “one of Poland’s major political and economic partners in the Asia and Pacific region,” noting that the Polish-Japanese relationship has been strengthened by “Japan’s strong support for efforts to stop Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,” including the imposition of sanctions on Moscow.

“Japan, like Poland,” Müller explained, “regards Russia’s aggression as a serious threat to the global order,” adding that the G7 leaders would hold a summit in May in Hiroshima, Japan, to discuss Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, among other issues.

Today marks day 392 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Messages of support have poured in from around the world for Polish ski jumper Dawid Kubacki, whose wife is in hospital in critical condition.

On Sunday, the Polish Ski Federation (PZN) announced that Kubacki would not participate in the final leg of the FIS Raw Air tournament in Vikersund, Norway, “due to private reasons.”

The 33-year-old Kubacki explained his absence to fans on Monday, writing on Instagram that his “wife Marta is in hospital for cardiological reasons. She is in bad condition, and doctors are fighting for her life. She is in good hands. She is a strong girl. I know she will fight it.”

Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Morawiecki, team Poland’s coach Thomas Thurnbichler, The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), and rival ski jumpers Stefan Kraft of Austria and Karl Geiger of Germany all issued public messages of support for Kubacki after the announcement.

Kubacki explained that the tragic situation meant “the end of the season for me, but it’s not important now.”

The Polish ski jumper currently sits second in the overall FIS 2022/2023 World Cup standings, with three individual events and two team contests until the end of the season.

Norway’s Halvor Egner Granerud will likely take home this year’s FIS World Cup Crystal Globe after building an insurmountable lead in points.
