Russia’s moon mission has ended in failure after it appeared that its lunar landed crashed into the surface of the moon.

The probe, which was part of Russia’s rekindled lunar exploration program, encountered an „unusual situation” during its landing preparations. Efforts to reestablish contact with the probe have proven fruitless, as Roskosmos conceded defeat today in its quest to salvage the mission. Preliminary findings suggest that the Luna-25 probe deviated from its planned trajectory and smashed into the lunar surface. This marked Russia’s first lunar venture since 1976, when the Soviet Union vied with the United States during the historic space race. The Luna-24 vehicle back then successfully transported soil samples to Earth.

Geologists from Kraków’s Jagiellonian University and the Polish Academy of Sciences have unearthed four teeth belonging to ancient aquatic predators, the plesiosaurs, in central Poland.

Estimated to be about 148 million years old, the findings offer a unique peek into the world of creatures that once ruled Earth’s oceans. The teeth were discovered at the Owadów-Brzeziński quarry, a site celebrated for its exceptional preservation of Late Jurassic fossils, encapsulating both aquatic and land-based life forms. Plesiosaurs, powerful marine predators that dominated the seas during the Late Triassic to the Late Cretaceous period (roughly 237-145 million years ago), were distinct for their extended bodies and paddle-like limbs. With sizes ranging from 3.5 to 5 meters, their diet was based on fish.

Polish athlete Wojciech Nowicki has clinched a silver medal in the hammer throw at the Athletics World Championships on Sunday.

Poland’s celebrated Olympic champion, Nowicki, came second in the competition with an impressive throw of 81.02 meters. The host nation celebrated as Hungary’s Bence Halasz secured the bronze with his best effort of 80.82 meters. However, the day was dominated by Canada’s Ethan Katzberg, who set a national record to take the gold. Katzberg, who had already made a significant impression by topping the qualifiers, delivered a monumental throw of 81.25 meters in the fifth round. The silver medal marks the first medal for Poland in the ongoing championships, which will continue in Budapest until Sunday, August 27.

And finally, firefighters in Gdańsk have recruited a new member of their team in the form of a Belgian shepherd puppy called Kira.

The young dog starts her training at the Municipal Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Gdańsk as she joins the Specialist Search and Rescue Group. They deal with rescue operations after construction disasters and search and rescue of missing people in the open. Officers use rescue dogs to locate living people under collapsed buildings.
