Radio Gdansk English Service, Monday August 19th, 2019: Nearly 2 million protest in Hong Kong over the weekend

Despite heavy rain, an estimated 1.7 million residents took to the streets of Hong Kong yesterday in the eleventh consecutive week of protests. Sunday’s protests were relatively peaceful, a welcome contrast to recent scenes of chaos on the streets and in the Hong Kong airport.

The protests began nearly three months ago in opposition to a now-suspended extradition bill. Protestors are now calling for investigations into the possible abuse of force by the police, the release of those detained in connection with the demonstrations, and democratic elections in the region.

Further demonstrations are planned in the coming weeks, including potential strikes in districts around the city.

RESCUE EFFORTS UNDERWAY FOR CAVERS TRAPPED IN THE TATRA MOUNTAINS

Over two dozen rescuers are still working to free two men trapped in a flooded underground cave in Poland’s southern Tatra Mountains.

The two men were cut off Saturday from their companions by fast-rising groundwater in a corridor of the 24-kilometer-long Jaskinia Wielka Sniezna (Great Snowy Cave), the longest and deepest cave in the Tatra range.

As of Monday morning, rescuers and firemen had not yet been unable to establish contact with the trapped men. In an interview with TVN, the head of the Tatra volunteer search and rescue group, Jan Krzysztof, reported that rescuers planned to use explosives to gain access to the climbers, but that such an approach “could last days if not weeks.”

LECHIA SUFFERS FIRST DEFEAT IN EKSTRAKLASA LEAGUE

Last night’s match between Lechia Gdańsk and Częstochowa Raków ended in disappointing 2:1 loss for the white and green.

Despite being touted as the stronger team, Lechia’s offense failed repeatedly to advance on Raków, with the defense allowing goals by Brown Forbes in the first half, and Sapała again in the second. Częstochowa led 2:0 up into the 90th minute. until a penalty kick by Sobiech in added time put Lechia on the board. It was too little, too late, however.

The loss bumps Lechia down to 10th place in Ekstraklasa, a position they hope to improve at their match next Sunday against top-ranked (and currently undefeated) Śląsk Wrocław.

POLISH VILLAGE BAKES A FIVE-METER LONG CAKE

A village in northeastern Poland has baked a record-breaking five-meter-long “sękacz” or “knotted cake” during their annual Sękacz Festival last week.

The organizers of the 10th annual Sękacz Festival in Żytkiejmy, a village near the border of Russia and Lithuania, recently baked a five-meter (16-foot) sękacz consisting of a thousand eggs, 25 kg of flour, 25 kg of sugar, 25 kg of butter and 25 liters of cream. By comparison, the average sękacz is about 50-60 centimeters, or 1.5 to 2 feet tall.

All in all, the completed cake took two hours to bake and weighed about 80 kilos, or roughly 175 pounds. After baking, the sękacz was cut into several thousand pieces and eaten by festival participants.
