On this day 80 years ago, World War Two formally began when the France and Britain, along with Australia, New Zealand and other allies, declared war on Nazi Germany in response to the invasion of Poland two days before.
The declaration of war marked the moment when German territorial expansion became a World War. „Poland and the United States are not just allies, we’re 'rodzina’, we’re family”. Those were the words of US Vice President Mike Pence following talks between the two countries yesterday.
Speaking to the press on the final day of his Warsaw visit, Mr Pence said the relationship between the two countries is stronger than ever. The Vice President spoke about the history of Polish American cooperation all the way back to the contribution of Tadeusz Kościuszko to US War of Independence.
Polish and US delegations had been holding talks following Second World War commemorations on Sunday. It’s understood the talks covered co-operation on defence and energy as well as the prospect of adding Poland to the US Visa Waiver Program.
Mr Pence told reporters Poland could be added to the program „very soon”, which would allow Poles to travel to the United States for up to 90 days without needing a visa.
In the UK, it’s the start of what promises to be a dramatic week of Westminster politics.
The UK parliament is returning from its summer recess today and with just a week until it is due to be suspended, law-makers opposed to a no-deal Brexit will be racing to try to pass legislation to block current plans to leave the EU on October 31st with or without a deal.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned those in his party that attempts to delay or cancel Brexit won’t be tollerated and rebelling party members would be suspended from the parliamentary party.
In addition, the BBC reported yesterday that “live discussions” are being held at 10 Downing Street on the prospect of calling early parliamentary elections as soon as next month, but PM Johnson said in a statement yesterday that he did not want an election.
Gdańsk Airport has announced plans for a complex of seven new office buildings just metres from the terminal.
The new building would new buildings would be named after letters of the phonetic alphabet such as Alpha, Delta, & Foxtrot and would add roughly 100,000 Sq. m of leasable floor space to the city’s market.
In sport, Poland’s basketball team have secured victory in their second game at the World Cup in Beijing.
The Poles beat hosts China by just three points, 76 to 79. It’s the teams second win after beating Venezuela at the weekend. Poland’s next game will be against Ivory Coast tomorrow and 11AM Polish time.
