Commemorations in Starogard today will honor the victims of Nazi atrocities in Szpęgawski Forest 80 years ago.
Officials plan to unveil a monument to the over 5000 civilians executed there between September 1939 and January 1941; the victims were primarily representatives of the Polish intelligentsia from Kociewie, Kashubia and other regions of Pomerania, along with Jews, German opponents of Nazism, and patients of the psychiatric hospital in Kocborów.
In addition to ceremonies this afternoon, the film „Szpęgawsk 1939 – Pomeranian Crime” will be screened at the Sokół cinema in Starogard at 14:00 and 16:00, and a musical entitled “Awakenings” will be performed at 19:30 at the Starogard City Hall. Admission to the films and musical is free and passes are available at the Starogard Cultural Center.
Additionally, every Wednesday Radio Gdańsk broadcasts “Portrety Szpęgawskie,” stories of the people — priests, teachers, farmers, Jews, Poles, and Germans — murdered in Szpęgawsk.

After a heartbreaking loss to Slovenia last week, the Polish men’s volleyball team triumphed over France 3:0 last night to take home the bronze in the 2019 EuroVolley championship.
Despite being on their home turf and leading in the first set, the French team was slowly worn down by the relentless Polish offence over a series of three tight sets, eventually ending with a score of 24-26, 22-26, and 21-25.
After losing to Serbia less than 24 hours before, the French appeared to give up by the end of the match with Poland, allowing the match point serve by Maciej Muzaj to go unanswered. Cuban-born Wilfredo Leon took top-scoring honors with 18 points overall, followed by team captain Michał Kubiak, who scored 14 points along with an impressive ace in the second set.
The Poles have little time to celebrate their first podium finish in eight years, however, as they are now off to Japan for the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup where they will face off against Tunisia on Tuesday at 8:00 CET.
For some it was a landmark and for others an eyesore. After three years submerged in the Gdańsk Marina, the 40-ton yacht “Incentive” was finally removed Saturday morning with the assistance of Stocznia Remontowa and the third-largest floating crane on the Polish coast.
As the British owner of the yacht did not respond to calls from the city or the regional Maritime Office, officials were forced to take the matter to court. According to Anita Żebrowska, the manager of Marina Gdańsk, it was the court’s judgment that was crucial in initiating the removal, which required the efforts of roughly a dozen people and cost nearly 200,000 złoty.
The wreck will now be auctioned off to cover the 20,000 złoty debt resulting from unpaid parking fees.
Lechia Gdańsk defeated Legia Warszawa last night 2:1 in Warsaw to take the top spot in the Ekstraklasa league rankings.
Largely due to the efforts of defenders Michał Nalepa and Błażej Augustyn, Lechia secured their fifth straight victory yesterday despite allowing a goal early on and trailing in the first half.
Assisted by Haraslin, Nalepa tied things up before the break at the 38 minute mark, with Augustyn pushing Lechia ahead with another goal in the early minutes of the second half. The victory marks the first time since 2016 that Lechia has defeated their Warsaw rivals.
The top-ranked White and Green will face off against 12th-ranked Zagłębie Lubin at PGE Arena next Saturday at 8pm.
