The prime ministers of the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary were in Prague over the weekend to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution in the former Czechoslovakia.
In a speech on Sunday, Prime Minister Morawiecki celebrated that “the countries of our region chose the path of freedom and democracy, and three decades later we can say that it was the right choice.”
The Velvet Revolution began November 17, 1989, when police in Prague brutally beat participants of a march commemorating Nazi repression in 1939. Protestors took to the streets in response, eventually leading to the collapse of the Communist regime and the election of Vaclav Havel in free elections in December of the same year.

Yesterday marked the 17th annual World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, an event observed in Poland every year since 2006.
The annual event is meant to raise awareness of the number of people who die or are injured as a direct result of road accidents, as well as the need for support and rehabilitation “not only the families and relatives of the killed, but also the perpetrators of tragic accidents.”
According to statistics compiled by the Road Traffic Bureau of the National Police Headquarters, there were 2,504 accidents in the province of Pomerania last year, including 146 deaths and 3,098 injuries. Of all the Polish provinces, Pomerania had the lowest number of deaths but the highest number of injuries per 100,000 residents in 2018.
Nationwide, some 31.7 thousand accidents were reported to the police in 2018. Of this number, 2,862 resulted in fatalities and 37,359 in injuries, of which almost 11,000 victims were seriously injured.
