Radio Gdansk English Service: Robert Lewandowski sets a new Champions League record

Boris Johnson’s Conservatives have a strong lead with two weeks left to the UK’s general election. Last night, a major poll showed the Conservatives on track for a large majority in parliament; over 60 seats.

Polls can be highly unreliable, but two years ago the same poll accurately predicted the outcome of the 2017 election, so the results will be watched closely in the UK. The poll also showed significant gains for the Scottish National Party and one new seat Liberal Democrats, but Labour lost seats and the Brexit Party won no seats at all.

Ukrainian filmmaker and human rights activist, Oleg Sentsov, has finally collected the 2018 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought after being released from a Russian prison.

Sentsov was awarded the prize last year in recognition of his dedication to free speech and human rights. The Ukrainian was kept as a political prisoner in Russia until September, when he was released as part of a high-profile prisoner swap.
He collected the prize at the European Parliament on Tuesday, where he warned lawmakers not to trust Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Animal rights groups have said the German Navy accidentally killed 18 endangered Baltic Porpoises during military exercises.

The groups say the animals were killed when old WW1 & 2 mines were detonated as part of NATO military exercises in August, that’s according to German news site, Deutsche Welle. The German Conservation Association, NABU, says that the mine detonations broke wildlife protection laws as the Navy failed to appropriately consult environmental protection agencies. The German government responded, saying the presence of NATO minesweeper ships as part of the exercise presented a critical opportunity to protect life and limb. Baltic Porpoises are considered critically endangered, with estimates of fewer than 1000 individuals left in the sea.

Russians and Poles work together for a new museum project.

„Connected by Amber” is a joint project between the Gdansk Museum and the Museum of the World Ocean in Kaliningrad.
In a meeting earlier this week, the project presented the concept for a new permanent exhibition for the Gdansk Amber Museum. The exhibition is to be located in the Great Mill building in downtown Gdansk, which is currently being renovated. It would feature sections on amber in nature and amber in culture, as well as restaurants and amber shops.
It is set to be ready by June, 2021.

Robert Lewandowski sets a new Champions League record after scoring four goals in less than a quarter of an hour.

The Polish footballer took just 14 minutes and 31 seconds to net four goals in Bayern Munich’s 6-0 victory against Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday. Lewandowski isn’t far from setting his next Champions League record; he needs just one goal to match Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of 11 goals in the group stage. But, with just one group stage game left, all eyes will be on the Polish striker on Wednesday December 11th when Bayern Munich face Tottenham Hotspur.
