Polish PM to discuss EU budget in Brussels
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki visited Brussels yesterday to discuss the European Union’s new budget with top EU officials. His talks with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen were expected to focus on a range of issues including the bloc’s next multiannual budget for 2021-2027. The visit comes at a time when EU heads of state and government are preparing for a special summit later this month during which they will attempt to agree on key points of a proposed budget for the bloc. Morawiecki was earlier this month quoted as saying that the European Commission’s proposal on the bloc’s new budget for 2021-2027 was “insufficient” and “not ambitious enough.”
Countdown to Poland’s Eagles film awards
A tale of a young man masquerading as a priest and a movie about a 1930s famine in Soviet Ukraine are among productions vying to be named best film at Poland’s prestigious Orły (Eagles) awards. The awards for 2020 will be handed out by the Polish Film Academy at a gala ceremony on March 2nd. Among the movies with a shot at the title are director Agnieszka Holland’s Mr. Jones. The film tells the story of Welsh journalist Gareth Jones, who reported on the Great Famine in Soviet Ukraine, a man-made disaster that killed millions in 1932 and 1933. The movie won the top Golden Lions award at the Polish Film Festival in the northern city of Gdynia in September. Another contender for the Eagles awards is Corpus Christi, which tells the story of 20-year-old Daniel, who after leaving juvenile detention pretends to be a priest. The film, by up-and-coming Polish director Jan Komasa, has made it into a list of a final five nominees for an Oscar in the best international film category. At last year’s Eagles awards, Paweł Pawlikowski scooped the prize for best director while his feature Cold War was named best film.
