As of 10 o’clock this morning there were 246 known cases of the virus in Poland, 8 of which are in Pomerania. There was an increase in known cases across Poland of 8 overnight but no new cases in Pomerania.
5 deaths have been reported but 13 have recovered including Poland’s first Coronavirus patient. Late yesterday evening the European Union announced it would close its borders to all non-EU citizens for at least the next 30 days. The measures will include all EU member states as well as Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway, & Switzerland.
The measures will close Europe’s external borders to all except returning citizens and their families, long-term residents, diplomats, and international & healthcare workers as well as those transporting goods. The UK however, will not be included in the ban as it remains in a transition period of leaving the EU and is treated largely the same as a member state. Elsewhere in the world, the United States and Canada have also stopped travel across their almost 9000km border.
Some US primary elections go ahead despite virus
In the states that did vote, the clear winner was former Vice President Joe Biden, winning all three states. The result now puts Mr. Biden well ahead of Bernie Sanders, the only other candidate still in the race.
Euro 2020 delayed to next year, Europa and Champions Leagues delayed to June
In sport, it was announced yesterday that the 2020 European football championship will be postponed until next year.
In a teleconference, 55 European football associations also agreed to delay both the Champions League and the Europa League until the summer. The final of the Europa League, which is due to be held in Gdansk, has been moved back to June 24th or 25th, though this is thought to be an optimistic date.
In other developments today:
– Saudi Arabia has suspended all private sector work other than food and healthcare services for two weeks
– Cases of the virus have now been confirmed in all 50 US states
– and the UK has announced an economic support plan worth £350 billion, that’s more than 1.7 trillion PLN.
Poland launches online learning system
The Polish government has launched a new system for online learning to support school students and anyone else who’d like to learn from home, during the long weeks of isolation ahead.
The system, called Zdalne Lekcji, creates an interactive daily program of lessons with links to learning material in subjects from all across the school curriculum. It’s available online and we’ll be posting a link on our website and on our Twitter feed @RadioGdanskNews.
