Radio Gdańsk News in English: Donald Trump has told Americans to prepare for the „toughest week”

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Mr Trump said the coming week would likely be the worst to date but added that the situation could be much worse without social distancing measures.

But he also repeated his hope that restrictions could be lifted by Easter, saying „we have to open our country again” and „the cure cannot be worse than the problem itself”.

Across the Atlantic however there was a more somber message from the UK’s Head of State. Queen Elizabeth II made a rare public address last night, only the fifth such address in her 68 year reign.

In the address, broadcast on TV and Radio in the UK and other Commonwealth nations, the Queen thanked healthcare workers and those staying at home.

She recalled the pain many felt during the Second World War when they were separated from loved ones, but said that „now, as then, we know, deep down, that it is the right thing to do”.

She finished by reminding us that „better days will return” adding „we will meet again”, a reference perhaps to a popular song from 1939 by Vera Lynn.

Also in the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been admitted to hospital after showing persistent symptoms of Covid 19.

The Prime Minister was diagnosed with coronavirus 11 days ago and has been in self-isolation. His admission to hospital is said to be a precautionary step so that „routine tests” can be carried out.

America’s President Trump has wished Mr Johnson well, describing him as a great friend, gentleman, and leader.

Mr Johnson so far remains in charge of the British government but should he become incapacitated, UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab would take over.

Here in Poland, police have been using some interesting methods to enforce lockdown rules as sunny weather tempted some people out of their homes this weekend.

In Pomerania, police used drones and even a Black Hawk helicopter to monitor beaches, parks, and other beauty spots. The helicopter, similar to those used by the military, could be spotted patrolling Tricity over the weekend, directing ground units to anyone appearing to break strict social distancing rules.

Elsewhere, members of the Polish Territorial Defence Force, or WOT, were deployed alongside police and city guards to patrol on foot and make sure people stay in their homes.

Since the pandemic arrived we’ve seen one sporting event after another cancelled or postponed, including the Europa League football final set to be held here in Gdansk.

But there is one event that went ahead this weekend, albeit with a bit of a twist. The Virtual Grand National horse race was held this weekend, after the real thing was cancelled thanks to the virus.

The virtual race, which saw an audience of more than 4 million, was won by Potters Corner at odds of 18-1 with the proceeds from the race have been donated to healthcare charities.

Weather

It’s certainly tough staying at home today with unbroken sunshine forecast throughout the afternoon and temperatures up to 16°C, that 61°F.
