Millions of Americans celebrated Independence Day across the US yesterday, with some in Poland joining in the festivities by sending their best wishes to their allies across the Atlantic. In a letter posted online, President Duda wished the American nation luck and prosperity, noting that “Poland and the United States are bound by ties of centuries-long friendship and brotherhood.”
His words were echoed by those of US Ambassador to Poland Georgette Mosbacher, who described the Polish-American alliance as “one of the world’s strongest and most enduring friendships.”
Referring to last week’s talks between the Polish president and his US counterpart in Washington, Mosbacher went on to emphasize that “ the visit underscored that we stand together in doing all that we can to bring prosperity to the lives of our citizens… just as we have stood together during earlier wars, we stand together today in the fight against the coronavirus.”
President Duda was the first foreign leader to visit the United States since the beginning of the coronavirus epidemic.
This year marks the 244th anniversary of the date when Americans officially declared their independence from Great Britain. They later defeated the British in the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783) with the help of the French and several notable Poles, including Tadeusz Kościuszko and Casimir Pulaski.

Slow Fest Sopot ends today
The annual Slow Fest Sopot culinary festival is in full swing today on the Sopot Pier offering visitors the chance to sample a wide array of dishes from local Pomeranian restaurants.
This year the layout of the festival will be slightly different due to the need to observe additional sanitary measures. Vendors will be housed in individual stalls instead of at one long table, and participants will be required to go through a disinfection tunnel upon entering the pier.
Tri-city restaurants taking part in the festival include Chochla , Piñata , Oh My DoG , Ducha66 , Marmolada Chleb i Kawa , Atelier Smaku , Lolo Thaijolo Gdynia , Fidel and K5 Culinary Academy .
The festival runs today from 11:00 until 18:00. Admission is free after buying a ticket to the pier (PLN 9 normal and discounted PLN 4.5), and degustacja (tasting) tickets for each restaurant are an additional 5 PLN. As some vendors may not accept cards, it is advisable to bring cash.
