Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Friday appealed to the public to vaccinate themselves against COVID-19, warning that the situation in Western Europe indicated danger. According to Morawiecki, Poland has a vaccination infrastructure equipped to receive 700,000 people a day, or around 5 million per week, which could cover the unvaccinated section of the adult population before the fourth wave hits, bringing the country closer to herd immunity.
Morawiecki and other health officials have warned that the fourth wave may begin as early as August as Poles return from their summer vacations. In his speech yesterday, Morawiecki pointed out that Polan’s vaccine program has enabled the country to develop „a fragile advantage” over the coronavirus during the past few weeks, adding that if the public continues to get vaccinated, the country may avoid another lockdown when the fourth wave hits.
As of Friday, Poland had injected more than 18.2 million first doses of COVID-19 vaccines, while over 17.3 million people had been fully inoculated, according to the most recent health ministry data.

The Polish men’s volleyball team beat Japan in their fourth match at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo on Friday, securing a guaranteed spot in the quarterfinals.
The Polish team won 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 26-24) in the Pool A group-stage game at Ariake Arena in the Japanese capital.
Poland lost 2-3 to Iran in their opening game at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics last week but later went on to beat Italy and Venezuela. The Polish team is currently top of their group with 10 points, ahead of Canada with seven points and Japan with six.
Regardless of the result of their last group-stage game against Canada Sunday morning, the Polish team will advance to the tournament’s quarterfinals. The Polish Canadian matchup is scheduled for 2:00 am CEST on Sunday.

As part of celebrations for the city’s 120th anniversary, the City of Sopot will be hosting a three-day Kite Festival and the IX international Sopot Beach Rugby tournament this weekend.
The festival kicked off Friday with kite-building workshops and kite shows, with the international rugby tournament and a special night-time light-up kite show set to take place today.
Highlighted as “one of the largest beach rugby tournaments around the world,” the tournament annually hosts some 400 international rugby players from Poland and abroad.
The Kite Festival will wrap up on Sunday, August 1, with a kite variant of the “Holi Festival of Colors.” New kite variations will be launched every forty-five minutes, with participants encouraged to join in.
Both events are free to watch and will take place on the beach near the Sopot pier at entrance no. 23.

Drivers are reminded that traffic on Al. Niepodległości in Sopot will be restricted to the westbound lane in each direction due to scheduled road repairs over the weekend.
From 5:30 pm on Friday until 6 am on Monday morning, a section of the eastbound lanes of Al. Niepodległości in the direction of Gdańsk will be closed. The construction will affect a 400-meter section from ul. Armii Krajowej to ul. dwudziestego trzeciego marca.
Traffic in both directions will be rerouted to use the two westbound lanes in the direction of Gdynia. Buses and trolleybuses, including the N1 night bus, will still be running but will not stop at the „Goyki 01” stop. Drivers wanting to access Sopot using this route are being advised to use alternate means of transportation or an alternate route.
