It was announced yesterday that Poland would dissolve a contested disciplinary system for judges, which the EU has said breaches the bloc’s law. The European Union’s executive arm gave Poland until August 16 to comply with the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruling that Poland’s system for disciplining judges violates EU law and should be suspended. According to the EU, the system is being used to exert political control over rulings.
Jarosław Kaczyński, head of Poland’s ruling PiS party, informed state news agency PAP yesterday that the government “will dissolve the Disciplinary Chamber as it currently operates and in this way the subject of the dispute will disappear.”
Kaczyński went on to state that the first draft of laws on a new disciplinary regime will be drawn up and put forward by the government in September.

The most recent victory came as Team Poland won silver in the women’s 4x400m relay, just behind the United States and head of the Jamaican team in third.
The Polish team of Natalia Kaczmarek, Iga Baumgart-Witan, Małgorzata Hołub-Kowalik, and Justyna Święty-Ersetic clinched their victory in a time of three minutes, twenty seconds, and fifty-three nanoseconds (3:20:53).
Despite setting a world record for speed climbing in the first stage of her event, Poland’s Aleksandra Mirosław finished fourth in the women’s climbing competition in Tokyo on Friday, narrowly missing out on an Olympic medal.
Janja Garnbret of Slovenia claimed the first gold medal in the women’s climbing event, followed by Japan’s Miho Nonaka and Akiyo Noguchi. The 2020 Olympics marked the first time the event, which combines speed climbing, bouldering, and a timed climb, was offered in competition.
