Radio Gdansk News in English: UN Report Calls for Global Climate Action | Tsimanouskaya „Feels Safe” in Poland | Designs Shortlisted for 'Miecznik’ Warships

A landmark report on climate change, published by the United Nations, has issued the starkest warning yet of the danger of global warming. The report, issued by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said it was „unequivocal” that human actions had caused warming. It added that the current situation was unprecedented in „centuries to many thousands of years” and that more heatwaves, droughts, and floods could be the outcome.

But the report also said that major cuts to greenhouse gas emissions could have a powerful effect in reducing climate change and called for countries to work together and accelerate the move away from fossil fuels.

The report comes ahead of Cop26 – a major international summit on climate change – later this year.

Tsimanouskaya „Feels Safe”. A Belarusian Olympic athlete given humanitarian protection in Poland has said she now feels safe in the country.

Krystsina Tsimanouskaya told the Polish Press Agency (PAP) she felt good in Poland and was eating and sleeping well once again. The sprinter added that her husband is joining her in Poland, that she is in touch with her family in Belarus daily and that they are well.

Tsimanouskaya had been competing for Belarus as a sprinter at the Tokyo games. She was offered a humanitarian visa by Poland following an incident in which she claims Belarusian officials tried to force her to return to Belarus as punishment for criticising them.

Many Belarusians have made the journey to Poland escaping oppression in the authoritarian country.

Three contenders have been chosen to design a set of new warships for the Polish Navy.

Spain’s Navantia shipyards, Britain’s Babcock, and Germany’s Thyssenkrupp have all put forward proposals for the fleet of new Miecznik (Swordfish) Class frigates. Each design is based on existing warships, but would be tailored to Polish needs and the warships would all be built in Poland.

Three of the new ships were ordered last week by Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak at a ceremony in Gdynia. When operational later this decade, the ships are expected to replace some of the Navy’s older vessels.
