Radio Gdansk News in English: Polish deputy PM fired amid spat over new economic plan

A Polish deputy prime minister has lost his job amid a dispute over a set of new economic policies proposed by the country’s ruling conservatives. A government spokesman said, „Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki today asked President Andrzej Duda to dismiss Jarosław Gowin from the posts of deputy prime minister and minister for development, labour and technology”. Gowin said the conservative Agreement group of which he is leader would exit Poland’s governing right-wing coalition, leaving the future of the coalition in doubt, however a government spokesman said that the governing United Right coalition might be able to retain a majority in parliament even after Gowin’s dismissal. Gowin has voiced criticism of some of the tax reforms contained in the government’s recently unveiled „New Deal” economic programme.

Two watercolours that were looted from Poland during World War II have returned to the National Museum in the south western city of Wrocław after more than 80 years.

The two paintings are a self-portrait of artist Joseph Kalter and his portrait of his wife Amalia Kalter. During a ceremony in Warsaw on Monday, Poland’s minister of culture and national heritage said the regained paintings were yet another example of successful efforts to recover artwork lost from Polish collections during the war. It is estimated that some 516,000 artworks went missing from Poland during World War II.
