Poland’s defence minister has announced a plan to build a permanent wall along Poland’s border with Belarus in a bid to beef up defences against illegal migration into the country. He said that Poland would draw on the experience of Hungary when it constructed a similar wall during the 2015 migrant crisis. Poland hastily constructed a barbed wire fence on the border, bolstered by around 3,000 troops after the Belarusian regime started to ferry migrants to the border in what Poland and other European countries have labelled as a hybrid war staged by the Belarusian strongman leader Alexander Lukashenko in response to EU sanctions against his regime for alleged human rights abuses. PLN 500 million has already been earmarked for the project.

Poland’s prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki has accused the Polish opposition of spreading lies that Poland wants to leave the EU in an attempt to weaken the bloc.
The PM was speaking at a press conference in Budapest as part of his annual summit with the so called „Visegrad Group” of countries which includes Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. The PM pointed out that many other countries in Europe have had similar verdicts from their own constitutional tribunals on the primacy of national law over EU law and have not faced any backlash. Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal last week ruled that several articles of the EU Treaties do not comply with the Polish constitution.
