Radio Gdansk News in English: Poland summons Belarusian defence attaché after shots fired at border

Poland has said that it will summon the Belarusian defence attaché after shots were fired at the border between the two countries amid the continuing migrant crisis there.


Officials said that on Wednesday evening, shots were fired from „Pneumatic weapons” which damaged illuminating masts placed by Polish soldiers at the border with Belarus near the Polish city of Terespol.

The head of Poland’s central bank has stated that the Polish economy is very good shape despite experiencing high inflation in recent months. 

Speaking at an economic awards ceremony, the head of the National Bank of Poland told the gathering that „inflation is a fact of life almost everywhere in the world” and that „Poland’s economic performance is the best since the partitions”. On the topic of inflation he predicted that the current inflation would persist into the first quarter of 2022 before falling again, unless unexpected factors came into play.

The Polish Deputy Health Minister has said that the government is considering introducing a „Covid Passport” scheme as the country struggles to get more people vaccinated.

Poland is currently experiencing the so called „4th wave” of the virus with just over 27,000 new infections reported and a little over 500 deaths. Speaking on Polish Radio the minister said the government was duty bound to consider measures that increased the number of vaccinations. Countries such as Spain and Portugal have smaller deaths per capita and have higher rates of vaccinations. He added that the passport scheme was under discussion, adding that he expected public resistance to such a scheme adding that now was not the best time for people to be out on the streets protesting.

The well known Christmas tree in Gdańsk’s Long Market in the centre of the old town has been erected once again for the festive period.

The tree, which stands at 25 metres tall and is decorated with 25,000 lamps is artificial, being brought from the warehouse and assembled from several parts. It is also already decorated, but the residents will have to wait for the visit of Mikołaj, who will appear in Gdańsk on December 5, to turn on the lamps.
