Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke with the Emir of Qatar over the weekend, with the two leaders reportedly discussing diplomatic and humanitarian support for Ukraine along with the current situation in the Middle East.

During their conversation, Zelenskyy thanked Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Sani for the USD 100 million in humanitarian aid provided by Qatar and the country’s diplomatic role in returning children captured by Russia.

Last Monday, a Qatari official cited by Reuters said that three children, whom the Russians took from the occupied parts of Ukraine, would be handed over to the authorities in Kyiv through Qatari diplomats in Moscow.

According to Zelenskyy, documents confirm some 20,000 Ukrainian children have been kidnapped by Russia, with the actual number expected to be much higher.

Zelenskyy and Sheikh Tamim also discussed the situation in the Middle East and agreed on the need to de-escalate the conflict, seek peace, and defend civilians. Zelenskyy noted that it is essential that humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians and aid deliveries function without any obstacles.

Today is day 607 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

A large-scale manhunt is still underway for a local man accused of murdering his six-year-old son in their Gdynia apartment last week. On Saturday, the prosecutor’s office formally issued a warrant for the arrest of 44-year-old Grzegorz Borys, whom investigators accuse of killing his 6-year-old son in their apartment in Fikakowo. An intensive search for the suspect has been ongoing since Friday.

Local police have been joined by representatives of other service agencies, including some 200 military police, who spent the weekend combing the forests of the Tricity Landscape Park, vacant lots, and green areas around the Karwiny district of Gdynia in search of the suspect. Over a thousand people are reportedly involved in the effort, with police releasing updated photos and video surveillance footage of the suspect in an appeal to the public to help find him.

Polish and European space agencies have chosen 18 experiments designed by Polish companies to be carried out at the International Space Station.

Under an agreement signed in August between the Polish Space Agency (POLSA) and the European Space Agency (ESA), Polish astronaut Sławosz Uznański is to take part in a mission to the ISS to „test Poland’s high tech” and conduct scientific experiments.

POLSA head Grzegorz Wrochna told Polish Radio last Friday that the tests are designed to allow for faster development of Polish companies in the space industry. The experiments include a test of Polish AI, some „mechanical experiments, including those in the space mining sector,” and „equipment, which might be used for future space missions.”

According to Poland’s Development and Technology Minister Waldemar Buda, some 400 Polish companies are currently active in the space sector.

Polish scientist Sławosz Uznański, who was selected earlier this year, will be the second Polish astronaut in space after the late Mirosław Hermaszewski, who took part in an eight-day Soviet space mission in 1978.

Since September, Uznański has been training for the upcoming mission at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany.

A local security guard has been arrested after being accused of beating Mikayla Cowling, an American basketball player for VBW Arka Gdynia, in a Gdańsk music club last week.

As described by Bogusław Witkowski, president of the Gdynia basketball club, „the American was punched several times in the face by a security guard and has a fractured orbital bone (eye socket),” among other injuries.

Witkowski went on to say he was shocked by the incident as he „didn’t think such things still happened here,” telling reporters from the Polish Press Agency that the club didn’t initially release information on the incident as „we wanted certain procedures, both legal and medical, to be carried out peacefully.”

Cowling’s injuries were described by Witkowski as „serious,” and he said the player would be on medical leave for at least 1.5-2 months. The perpetrator arrested by the police on Friday had reportedly been convicted for similar crimes in the past.

Despite Cowling’s absence, Arka Gdynia defeated SKK Polonia Warszawa 68:59 (19:19, 25:10, 16:8, 8:22) last night in their second consecutive victory. The team is currently in 2nd place in their group for the EuroCup championships and will face group leader Emlak Konut of Istanbul on Thursday, October 26, at 7:30 p.m.
