The new rules are expected to take effect from August 1st, this year. In an unusual example of cross-party support, the Government sponsored Bill was supported by 419 members of the lower house of Poland’s parliament who voted for this change in the law while four were against. There were no abstentions. It is estimated that more than 2 million young people will benefit from the revamped tax rules. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said last month that the move aimed to encourage young people to stay in Poland and to improve their prospects. Poles, especially the young, flocked abroad en masse in search of better paid jobs as Western labour markets opened up to them after Poland joined the European Union in 2004. The change in tax rules is part of a swathe of ambitious spending pledges announced by Poland’s conservative government earlier this year.
